Chapter 4 of 10

Chapter Summary[]

Dog's Point of View[]
The morning after his argument with Graceful, Dog is on another hunt, this time with Brave, Wise, and Quick as the leader. They reach the edge of the wolf pack's territory and spot several sheep milling around in a ranch. Quick begins digging a hole in the fence, big enough for a wolf to slip through. He calls the hunters to him and explains his plan. Quick wants to go for a few sheep because they are easy prey, but he also warns to watch out for loudsticks and longpaws. They agree, and charge down the hill towards the sheep's pen. Dog stops the group, declaring that he smells something. Quick brushes off his concern and launches himself at the nearest sheep, snapping at it's neck. The other wolves join in, and the sheep begins to panic and bellow, attracting the attention of some fierce-dogs, who promptly rush over to defend the flock. Brave and Wise see them and make a hurried retreat, but are promptly cut off. The Fierce Dogs spread the wolves thin, separating them and causing chaos. Quick finally calls for a retreat, but he is pinned down and trapped. While the other wolves flee, Dog doubles back and slams himself into one of the Fierce Dogs trapping his half-brother. Quick manages to free himself and promptly bolts, but Dog is quickly surrounded and outnumbered. While he desperately tries to get out, a loud bang spooks the other wolves and causes them to run into the forest, leaving Dog behind to fend for himself. He is stunned by a massive blow to his side, and lays sprawled in the dirt, waiting for the final bite. The Fierce Dogs debate whether he is a dog or a wolf, and then whether they should kill him or not. Finally, they decide to wait for The Rancher, and Dog promptly passes out.
