Chapter Summary

Lucky's Point of View

Lucky and Mickey scramble out of the crumbled house just before it collapses. Mickey lets out a loud yelp of despair, and howls for his missing longpaws. Lucky stays silent, letting Mickey vent without comment. Eventually, the black-and-white Farm Dog quiets and asks Lucky why he is in the city. Lucky looks away and mumbles something about having to leave the pack. Mickey watches him for a moment and tells Lucky that they have to go back to the Wild Pack because the city isn't safe anymore. Lucky hesitates, explaining that he can't rejoin the pack, but eventually Mickey convinces him to try, and the two start to head for the forest. However, Mickey barks at Lucky to wait, and he disappears behind a loudcage for a moment, before reappearing with a tattered longpaw glove held in his jaws. He walks over to the wreckage of his former home and cleans the glove of dirt and grime. He drops the glove at what used to be the doorway, and speaks directly to it. He says a few words about his longpaws and the house, before backing away and following Lucky towards the edge of the city. Before they can leave, a loud roaring shriek erupts from a horizon of buildings. Lucky and Mickey freeze and spin around towards the noise, squinting their eyes to see what made the noise. Lucky spots some flying creatured in the distance, each one with a longpaw in its belly. The two dogs watch as several of the birds head towards the forest. They race after them, determined to stop them.
