Chapter: Prologue
Chapter Summary
Lick's Point of View
- The prologue begins with Grunt protesting that a Fierce Dog never hides while Lucky and Mickey discuss what they'll do with the coyotes approaching. Lick understands Grunt's anger and knows that the golden dog, Lucky, knew something about the strange howls they heard.
- Mickey orders them to do as he does, and he masks his scent by rolling in mud and mulch. The pups repeat him, although Wiggle motions to clean himself with his tongue. Mickey scolds him, telling them all to not lick themselves no matter what.
- As the coyotes approach, Grunt grows more restless and does not wish to hide. Lucky has to hold him down to stop his struggling. Lick thinks to herself that he should stop fighting against Lucky. However, when the coyotes approach and they speak about what they'll do to the pups they scented, Grunt and the pups are immobilized.
- Grunt screws his eyes shut, Wiggle burrows deeper into Mickey's fur, and Lick snarls in her head that she'll never let the coyotes crunch her tail, and that she wasn't afraid of meeting the Earth-Dog.
