Chapter 1 of 10

Chapter Summary[]

Sweet's Point of View[]
Sweet is locked in combat with her Pack's Beta, a Swift-Dog named Callie. She is twisting and dodging most of her strikes, but stumbles when a claw catches on her cheek. After Sweet regains her balance, she realizes that Callie is attempting to blind her, a move that would maim Sweet for life. She is infuriated by this, and redoubles her efforts, eventually pinning Callie to the ground and clamping her jaws around the other Swift-Dog's neck. Sweet, relieved by the victory, lets her guard down for a moment and Callie manages to wriggle free, sending Sweet flying through the air in the process. Before she can spring back up, Callie lands on top of her, holding her down. Sweet curses silently, and realizes that something is wrong as an awful chill settles in her bones. Without warning, longpaws run out from the trees towards the Swift-Dog pack. Callie instantly releases Sweet, and they line up with their pack-mates, ready to defend the territory. Sweet is nervous, and she feels the urge to flee growing stronger, and puzzles over why her pack-mates aren't backing away. She eventually gives in, hoping that the others will follow, and fleeing a short distance away. Sweet turns around in dismay after she realizes that the other Swift-Dogs are still holding ground against the longpaws. She begins howling at them, trying to get the Pack to retreat.
Sweet snaps out of her dream, awoken by her own distressed howl. Her heart is racing and she struggles to calm down. Sweet realizes that it was actually a memory about the time she ran away, and she slowly gets to her paws, feeling miserable. She begins to think about Lucky, and how much she misses him. Sweet feels a sudden stab of angry bewilderment as she recalls the nature of their separation, with Lucky insisting that he was a lone dog. She pushes the golden-furred dog out of her mind, and bolts into the forest, determined to find her Pack again. After sifting through several prey scents, Sweet realizes that she is hungry, and begins following one of the stronger trails. She spots some movement in the undergrowth, and shoots forward, snatching up a russet mole. It is small, but enough to satisfy her hunger.
A sense of desperation comes over Sweet, she begins fretting about finding her Pack, and keeps looking for a scent trail. A sudden smells hits her nose, and she recognizes it as a Swift-Dog. A sense of hope swells in her chest, and she feels less certain about her earlier assumption, that she and Lucky were the only ones who escaped from the Trap House. Sweet feels optimistic, hoping that other members of her pack made it out as well, and races on. After a moment, she stops at an impasse, the river. Sweet runs toward it, eagerly trotting towards the bank, but hesitates as she is about to take a drink. The water doesn't look right, it has yellow scummy flecks and it smells of something unpleasant. She forces down the urge to drink, and begins looking for a way to cross without touching the sick waters. Sweet spots a molded bridge, but pauses before stepping on it, wondering if the fragile-looking bridge can hold her weight. She tests the sturdiness, placing two paws on the wood. When it does not break, Sweet slowly makes her way across, her ears pricked for the sound of breaking rope and wood. She hears a terrible, screeching creek and panics. Sweet decides that the only way to go is forward, and hurtles towards the opposite bank, her paws barely touching the ground. She desperately leaps for solid ground as the bridge completely gives way, and crashes onto the bank, shell-shocked but grateful. Sweet turns and thanks the River-Dog for letting her pass, and silently prays that she let Lucky pass through as well.
